Godzilla Vs. Kong Tops Pandemic Box Office

In just its first two weeks of release, Godzilla Vs Kong has surpassed Tenet to become the Pandemic’s highest-grossing film at the box office

Having been delayed several times, the latest MonsterVerse title, Godzilla VS Kong, finally released in cinemas and on HBO Max to excitement of many who had long-awaited its arrival. The epic match-up between the two Titans had been teased for a long time with multiple trailers showcasing the film’s battle sequences, settings and vibrant visuals. In its first week alone, GvK had already become the highest-grossing film of the 2021 box office and landed the largest opening weekend take of any movie since theatres shut their doors in March last year.

Having built up to the confrontation between Zilla And Kong over the course of three films, Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Warner Bros. gave each of the iconic characters a new backstory and a new look. Of the two monsters, Kong received the greatest overhaul with the studio opting to make the character much larger than in previous iterations in order to put him on a level with the taller-than-skycraper Godzilla. In fact, the Kong seen in Godzilla Vs Kong was made even larger than that of his appearance in Kong: Skull Island, where he already stood at 104 feet. Bringing the two to a more even height and size helped make their fight a more evenly matched and exciting affair and clearly helped drive more viewers to watch Godzilla Vs Kong sooner than later.

As per Deadline, Godzilla Vs Kong‘s domestic box office take of $69.5 million places it as the highest-grossing film released during the Pandemic. Its two gigantic lead characters gave it the legs to make $13.3 million in its second weekend which helped it to take the top spot away from fellow WB film Tenet.
